MISSION: Ensure that intensification in Dundas is environmentally and socially sustainable, and contextually appropriate.
Goal 1) Develop and implement a solution to the flood plain issue.
Goal 2) Develop a neighbourhood centre for the Governors Road neighbourhood.
Goal 3) Develop the plaza at Governors Rd and Castlewood to act as a secondary centre for Dundas.
Goal 4) Develop the entrance to Dundas on Cootes Drive as a commercial and residential area.
Goal 5) Put Hatt Street, Sydenham Street and King Street on road diets by decreasing the width and adding bump-outs to slow traffic. Increase the pedestrian amenities on these streets.
Love the idea of King Street being closed more often to vehicle traffic (eg. summer weekends) for pedestrians and existing merchants exclusively. My understanding is that the local mainstays feel "crowded out" during the large festivals by the pop-up ones.
I looked at the BIA document: very interesting. I don't remember it being publicized when it came out.
I agree that we need to try having King Street closed to car traffic for a while, at least. If they can do it for Cactus Festival, they can do it for other reasons as well.
Comment from Sara Woods: I found this from the city's official "Invest in Hamilton" Website. Very interesting from 2016 https://investinhamilton.ca/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/Dundas-BIA-Commercial-Assessment-2017.pdf
City Council is putting forth a amendment to expand parking and sidewalk space for restaurants tonight for pop-up cafés...something europe’s been doing for decades. It would perfectly suit Dundas! This is the sort of doable thing I think Dundasworks should get behind and timing is so perfect with the Covid crisis and the need for restaurants to be innovative. I wish we would put our minds to these sorts of things rather than big scale urban planning ideas myself especially as there have been several urban design plans and studies done over the years many which suggest the same thing over and over.
It’s ‘boots on the ground’ that is needed in my opinion. As for pedestrian zones, with traffic already being redirected from the Greensville hill it’s a perfect time to lobby for the streets to be closed Dundas for The merchants and pedestrians for Summer weekends The cactus festival is cancelled but we can still have the street closed off and let the restaurants and merchants spill out for Dundas residence - it doesn’t have to be advertised.
Hatt Street needs resurfacing and wider sidewalks. New hydro poles that were installed last year are in the road. This street is wide enough to accommodate wider sidewalks, a bike lane, and a boulevard planted with trees. A lot of houses on Hatt don’t have driveways so some street parking is needed.
